User Experience Design: Better Site Search through Patterns
by Paul Boutin on Sep.29, 2009, under User Experience
There is a lot of information out there and knowing what works and what doesn’t is a tough task which often requires testing. But often we can choose the best design by looking at patterns. By analyzing the problem and reviewing possible solutions we can either choose the best pattern or develop new ones using some of the ideas and information from others. The following are three patterns that I chose for a recent search project I did and may help you improve your site search without user testing.
- Filtering where the user can filter the full catalog down to what they are looking for broken down by category.
- Auto Complete search suggestions while you type.
- Help when it’s needed When “Sorry no results found try a different search” does not cut it.
